Question Description
Students with ASD often require a structured learning environment with the use of visual schedules to help them transition from one activity to another. Much like adults who use calendars and appointment books; students with ASD need to have a visual representation of their day to engage in effective learning. Visual schedules offer students with autism spectrum disorders a clear and concrete plan of their daily routines.
Using the Unit 3 Assignment Template, you will complete both parts of this Assignment. In the first part, you will develop a visual schedule for a preschool student (ages 3-5) and then in the second part you will complete an essay explaining the evidence and research supporting the use of visual schedules.
Part 1: Visual Schedule
Demonstrate your knowledge of effective visual strategies by developing a visual schedule with 10 pictures. Using the template provided, choose 10 pictures from web resources, digital pictures, and/or clip art to create a visual schedule for a preschool student (ages 3-5). Please be sure to give credit to your resources by citing your source. The daily schedule may include pictures of activities such as circle time, workstations, bathroom breaks, snack time, recess, etc.
Part 2: Essay
After creating your visual schedule, answer the following prompts and write a persuasive essay (2-3 pages), describing the use and evidence supporting the use of visual schedules and other visual supports.
- Provide an introduction of visual strategies as well as a thesis statement.
- Describe the purpose of providing visual schedules and explain how the schedules can be effective with young children with ASD.
- Discuss the research support for the use of visual schedules.
- Describe two additional visual supports and/or management strategies such as choice boards, positive behavior charts, structure/organization of the learning environment, token systems or task organizations that can be used with visual schedules.
- Give both an explanation of the two strategies as well as the purpose of the visual strategy. Support your decision to use the visual strategies based on the effects that the interventions have on different developmental domains (e.g., social/emotional, fine motor, gross motor, language/communication, cognitive/academic development, and self-help).
- Body: In 2-3 pages, answer all the essay questions in complete sentences and paragraphs
- Your responses should reflect professional writing standards using proper tone and language, and be free of spelling and grammatical errors. The writing should be well ordered, logical, and unified, as well as original and insightful, and should reflect knowledge of early childhood development and learning environments. Your viewpoint and purpose should be clearly established and sustained.
