Topic is: Give three examples of activities or traditions that bring people together.

Whichever topic you choose, remember that you want to use clear examples to help your points.

This essay, like each essay you will write this semester, should be between 500 and 750 words long. Be mindful of both the lower and upper word count limit. Any essay under 500 words will not receive more than fifty points.

This essay should follow the essay planning sheet provided for your use (you are not required to submit this file). You should have five paragraphs: one introductory paragraph with a thesis and three-part plan as the last sentence; three body paragraphs, each focusing on a single point/example, and each one beginning with a clear topic sentence; and one concluding paragraph. You’ll want to come up with a strong thesis and outline to help you with writing your paper.

Although we are doing grammar review during this course, you should already have mastered basic grammar and sentence structure and be able to show this in your essay. Proofread carefully.

Here are the formatting guidelines for this and every essay:

Use the MLA document format. Basically, this means . . .

At the top left of your paper, put a block of information: your name, your instructor’s name, the course, and the date. Use minimum 1-inch margins. Double space. Put your last name and the page number in the top right of each page. You don’t need a title page.

You will submit a working thesis statement to me after you have chosen an topic and started working on your essay.

When you are ready to submit your essay, use the essay link found below (the link will be open a few days before the essay is due). Your paper will be submitted to a plagiarism detector automatically. You are not allowed to submit an essay that you have written previously for this class or another.

A note on using outside sources:

You do not have to use outside sources for this essay, though you will notice that some of these topics might require research if you do not have enough prior knowledge of the topic to write without using outside sources. If you choose a topic and feel like you need to use credible outside sources, you must use in-text citations and have every source on your works cited page. If this is not something you are comfortable with, you need to choose a topic that you can write without doing research.

If you use outside sources, you must use no more than three (3) outside sources and most of the essay needs to still be your own words. Your works cited page should look similar to the example on page 797-798 (obviously with fewer sources).

If you use outside sources and do not cite them at all you are likely to be penalized for plagiarism.
