Question Description

Leadership, like communication and other patterns of daily living, varies across cultures and even some subcultures. There are many internal and external factors that comprise the depth-and breadth of an organization’s culture and the multiculturalism within its environment. These factors can also influence leadership in many ways. This makes it crucial for leaders, especially aspiring servant leaders, to have a sense of awareness about the cultures around them, as well as any personal cultural biases that may inhibit leadership effectiveness. Culturally competent servant leaders will also need to possess leadership characteristics that will assist them with contextualizing their leadership as they interface with various cultures. Contextualizing leadership helps leaders to lead in ways that are both culturally competent and relevant. In other words, leadership outcomes are predictably more favorable when followers can comprehend and execute organizational goals within their own cultural contexts. The onus to ensure an environment exists where this can best occur is with the leader.

In this assignment you will have the opportunity to use the “Dimensions of Culture” questionnaire to examine your perceptions and attitudes about various characteristics of your culture that might influence your leadership behaviors. You will also analyze a case that will allow you to practice your leadership in the cultural context of the situation and appropriately apply leadership contextualization principles.

  1. Analyze the issue(s) you are facing as the leader in (“Whose Latino Center Is It?”).
  1. Describe the leadership approach or combination thereof, i.e., trait, skills, behavioral, situational, that will be most useful in addressing the issue(s).
  1. Describe the leadership theory/model that will be most effective in achieving a favorable outcome in the situation.
  1. Identify the dimensions of culture that warrant the strongest consideration in the case, i.e., institutional collectivism, in-group collectivism, Power Distance, etc…, and your rationale for the selections.
  1. Show how the principles for leadership and contextualization presented in Dr. Leslie’s Pollard’s chapter publication, Paul: Principles of Leadership and Contextualization, can be applied to this situation to help ensure a favorable outcome.
  1. Reflect on any challenges experienced with contextualizing your leadership for this situation. What aspects of your leadership naturally aligned with the principles presented? What areas require further growth in order to optimize your cultural competency as a servant leader?

Describe 3 strategies that will best complement your continued growth and development as a culturally-competent and culturally relevant servant leader.
