How do you feel about ethics in finance and business?
Most people agree that ethical behavior is very important in the area of finance and business, and yet in recent years we have seen cases of extremely corrupt actions by US corporations and individuals. In this reflection assignment, you will review a case study on unethical behavior and be asked to discuss it, along with how you feel about the importance of ethics in the world of business.
In this two-part assignment, you will first pick one of the case studies below (you are free to watch them all if you like). Then you will answer the reflection assignment questions about the case study of your choice. All of these cases were mentioned in the first presentation for this module, and are classic examples of unethical behavior that have occurred within your lifetime.
Part 2: Answer ALL 4 questions below
For one of the above videos, answer all of the questions below in your own words (200 words or more). There are no wrong answers, but you must justify your opinions. Your answers must be well thought out, and well-written. HINT: Try to put yourself in the shoes of the people that were affected as you answer certain questions.
- Which case study video did you watch, and why did you choose it over the others?
- Discuss the unethical behavior that occurred in this case. Specifically, what made it unethical?
- As an employee, investor or taxpayer at that time, how would this make you feel? What would you do about it? Can you do anything about it?
- If you were the person responsible for this situation, what do you feel would be a just punishment for your actions? Hint: Describe the punishment that was given, and then discuss if it was harsh enough. Consider your family and friends, and how they would have been affected by your actions.
