SOC 450 Strayer University Week 10 Cost of Economic Growth Discussion

Question Description

Week 10 | Discussion

The Cost of Economic Growth

In Chapter 7: The Environment – Part II, Hite and Seitz (2016) discuss the existing tension between development and the environment. Development brings economic growth as well as social and environmental changes. To a developing country, economic growth may be of a higher priority than the consequences to the long-term health of its citizens or its environment. On the other hand, poverty can also harm the environment such as how searching for land to farm contributes to deforestation.

Do wealthy nations using the labor of developing nations have responsibilities to the people and environment of that country? Why or why not? Be sure to use examples of existing companies to support your response.

Review the posts of your classmates and respond to at least one other post, offering a substantive comment on that classmate’s position on the issue(s).

Below is peer’s discussion post in which I’ll have to provide a response too.

Absolutely! To me, it’s completely common sense. A country that is wealthier but is using the labor of the citizens that are from an underdeveloped country have an obligation morally and ethically to the people of that lesser nation and their environment. It’s completely foolish and arrogant for a better off nation to think that they shouldn’t care for the labor and land of the lesser nation just due to better financial resources. Both countries can benefit from the arrangement greatly. The richer nation will get the labor necessary to build their infrastructure and the poorer nation will get jobs and more income for the citizens of that country. The land should also be cared for not to harm in any way. Technology can be shared as well as a mutual benefit from other nations as allies to their host.
