Morgan State University Leadership Team Question Discussion

Question Description

I attached the book the chapters are chapter 4 and 5 incase if you need it in some questions

Please respond to one of the following questions:

  1. We read about Expectancy theory in Chapter 5. Give an example of how management can change employee perceptions and increase motivation for projects/initiatives in the current working environment with the global pandemic.
  2. Staying motivated at work is something a lot of employees struggle with, in your experiences what have you or management done to make sure motivations stay high?
  3. In chapter 5, Alderfer’s ERG Theory and Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory are talked about and explained. Throughout your working career have you been a part of either or think you have? If so, how did it help with employee motivation? If it didn’t help please explain.
  4. Imagine you are a manager and are conducting interviews for a position, you have two candidates. The first candidate barely meets the minimum qualifications. She has less experience and only a Bachelor’s degree. She shows up to their interview dressed very professionally with no visible tattoos or piercings. Meanwhile, the second candidate is highly qualified, she possesses the Master’s degree that is recommended and an additional 2 years of experience. However, she shows up to their interview dressed very casual in dark jeans and just a wrinkled blouse with a nose piercing and a tattoo peeking out from under the sleeve. Her hair has a few peek-a-boo purple highlights and is a bit disheveled. Both candidates do equally well during their interviews and references for both are above average. Which would you hire and why? Would you be influenced by the halo effect?
  5. If you can figure out what influences someone’s behavior it may be easier to manage them and understand what type of behavior they may show in the future. Considering attribution theory, can you give an example of either yourself or a subordinate that you were able to better understand through a perceived attribute and how did it impact yours/their specific behavior in the future? Do you feel their perceived attribute was the actual cause of why something happened?
  6. The TED talk below provides a compelling supplemental view to the concept of motivation in a business setting. Instead of motivating through incentives, it argues for motivation by autonomy. Given the context of Chapter 5, how does the TED talk compare to the theories of motivation portrayed in the readings?
