Part 1: The workforce planning process an important part of an organization’s business strategy. After the company’s talent philosophy and strategic staffing decisions have been made, it is important to conduct a workforce analysis to be aware of what the company’s current workforce looks like as well as the external labor market. Effective action plans seek to minimize the gaps between these two markets. In order to understand the workforce needs, forecasting is helpful to guide the organization in predicting their future business activities (and the staffing changes that come with). These activities may lead to a shortage or a surplus, depending on the trends identified in the forecasting process. Internal labor force trends that affect workforce planning includes employee turnover, promotion rates, employee satisfaction, etc. External labor force trends could include unemployment rates or the talent available.

Part 2: The better an organization understands the functions of their business, the better the organization can align their actions to their business strategy and talent philosophy. In order to strategically staff and act proactively, forecasting and planning helps the business be aware of potential shifts and prepare for them. This is particularly relavent if your talent/service is your competitive edge- as the organization never wants to be caught off guard (especially by a shortage) in a time of need.

Forecasting is necessary for firms because it helps plan and organize operations. It is often inaccurately used with wrong procedures, which causes firms to receive poor results. The toughest aspect of forecasting is predicting the market in the future rather than predicting sales and revenue. Firms should use it because it focuses on patterns, so experts can predict outcomes. I believe a firm’s staffing plan has become more diverse over the years. Diversity with more than just race but with gender. Positions assumed to be a “man’s job” has been proven incorrect, and women have represented themselves to show there is not a thing as a “man’s job.”

Forecasting the employees by quantity, quality, and position. This is critical is properly executing the planning process, because first you must address the situation as a whole. From there, the organization must assess the employees by their talents and strengths to see the project ability of those employees.
