Example 2:

A nullhypothesis would be “the human body average temperature is 98.6F”.This statement can be backed with a high level of confidence, since lotsof tests have been conducted to generate this hypothesis (Helmenstine,2019). An alternative hypothesis would be “the human body averagetemperature is less than 98.6F”. The alternative hypothesis is astatement that directly contradicts the null hypothesis (Taylor, 2019).If we test both, we would assume that one would not be true, meaningthe other would be true.

The population parameter is the average human body temperature, which is 98.6F.

H0: The human body average temperature is 98.6F.

Ha: The human body average temperature is less than 98.6F.

The test statistic formula that would be used would be:

because the sample size is greater than 30 (Holmes, et al., 2017).

H0 represents the null hypothesis and Ha represents thealternative hypothesis. The hypothesis test is left tailed because weare testing to see if the average body temperature is less than theaverage of 98.6F. We can test this hypothesis by taking a sample oftemperatures from randomly selected people and calculating the averagebody temperatures recorded. This will either support the nullhypothesis or reject it (Hayes, 2020). A type 1 error could occur ifthe information from the experiment provided an average body temperatureof 98.6 but it was still rejected.
