Each year the Office of Inspector General (OIG) publishes a Work Plan, which is a written outline of the various activities that the OIG will be working to pursue in the current and upcoming year. This includes information on any audits the OIG will be conducting as well as any legal and investigative initiatives that will be undertaken. Given the OIG’s role in the enforcement and support of healthcare compliance, the Work Plan is a very important planning tool for an Organization’s compliance program.

For this week’s assignment, you are going to assume the role the Health Information Department Manager of a 500 bed teaching academic hospital. As the HIM Director, you have an add on role of the departments compliance specialist and member of the organizations compliance team. Your primary role on this team is to conduct an annual review the most recent OIG Work plan, in which you will look for information that is contained in the plan that your organization may need to focus compliance efforts on. You will make recommendations for considerations to include in the current Organizational Compliance Plan.

Locate the current Office of Inspector General Work Plan on the Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General website at https://oig.hhs.gov/reports-and-publications/workplan/. Review the contents of the report and identify information from within the report that you feel is important to address in the Organizations Compliance Plan.
