1. Watch the video on the Great Law of Peace and read about it in Chapter 1 (p. 31). How did the Great Law of Peace provide for freedom of expression in the Iroquois confederacy?

2. Define enlightenment thinking (pp. 34-35). Then watch the video on Thomas Paine. Explain how Paine’s ideas are consistent with enlightenment thinking.

3. Watch the video of The Election of 1800 from the musical, “Hamilton.” Write a dialogue between Donald Trump, Joe Biden, and (if you would like) some of the major players in the election of 2020. What would you have them say and/or sing if you were writing a musical based on the current political environment.

4. Watch the biographical video and speech reading for any of the five advocates (Maria Stewart, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Frederick Douglass, Angelina Grimke, or Sojourner Truth). Then answer the following

A. What were the main ideas that your advocate wanted to express.

B. Based on what you read in Chapter 2, what barriers to freedom of speech could have faced your advocate?
