I would like you to look at the working of the welfare system in the U.S. For this week’s assignment please first read the article on welfare and intersectionality authored by Reingold and Smith as well as the newspaper article on welfare, race, and poverty. Second, please explain how the image of the welfare queen (see power point) structures our welfare system. How does race and class intersect in the legitimization of welfare caps? How, do you think, do such laws speak to the fact that poor families, and especially single mothers, of color are positioned outside of the white middle-class family ideal?
