  2. Nurse practitioners (NPs) are professional clinicians, and their roles are significant in achieving the healthcare goals and objectives. Professional performance is generally linked to job performance and requirements on the basis of professional expectations. It is important that NPs have knowledge, skills, and competencies to help promote quality care. Greater professional competence has positive impacts that include the reduced length of hospital stay, reduction in medical errors, improved patient satisfaction, and few cases of hospital readmission. Therefore, continuous evaluation of the professional competencies of nurses is crucial. A core pillar of nursing practice is the assessment of service delivery. According to Moule et al (2017), service rating is largely used in the nursing profession in order to gauge performance. There are different rating scales used to evaluate NPs. One is self-assessment. This is the most prevalent form of assessment. In this case, individual nurses gauge their performance based on the set goals. However, subjectivity is restricted when using this method to determine performance (Liang et al, 2021). The other method is peer assessment. It is the most efficient mode used to assess the professionalism of nurses. In addition, it is crucial when it comes to providing feedback and ensuring professional growth is improved. Research has established that it is a rating style that provides an accurate picture of clinical competence (Liang et al, 2021). The third rating method is the supervisor’s assessment. In this case, the supervisors are crucial to assessing the competence of NPs. In order to ensure high standards of care, it is important that this method is used on annual basis. This rating style is also a valuable tool. NPs must be able to maintain a positive rating. In achieving this goal, it must be emphasized that professional nursing practice involves the process of making decisions not just as a care provider, rather as a learner. Moreover, it includes reflecting upon an individual’s actions while providing care and after delivery. According to Liang et al (2021), nursing practice is important for competency enhancement. It is also dependent on situations. Training on the clinical judgment that is achieved through reflection would be significant in enhancing nursing competency. Yet it must be emphasized that on its own, reflection cannot enhance all the competencies (Fukada, 2018). There are different components that comprise nursing competency. Notable examples are knowledge, skills, values, attitudes, norms, and thinking capacity. For this reason, nursing competency training must be able to include different educational programs. In order to provide training on every element of nursing competency, the nursing competence components must be recognized and understood as core pillars of the clinical ladder (Fukada, 2018). When this happens, training methods can be developed to tackle the right order of acquiring competencies. In summary, evaluation of competency among NPs is crucial to guaranteeing quality patient care. There are different rating methods, which provide different results on the professional competencies of nurses. In this regard, the comprehensive evaluation must be done using different rating styles in order to boost nurse competencies. On the other hand, using different styles of rating nurses’ professional competency will bring additional benefits that could lead to the accurate evaluation of competencies. With a more accurate assessment of nurses, information can be found on how education gaps could help design continuing education programs important in assessing professional competencies and improving patient care.

  5. Discuss the different rating scales for NP evaluation.Nurse Practitioner (NP) profession has been an essential aspect of healthcare system as the practice positively impact the health of the people in the community. There has been tremendous decrease in the health disparity rate as many people in the remote and underserved areas are able to receive care through NP. However, the effectiveness of NP practice is evaluated to assess the skills and satisfaction of the population under their care. Some rating scales for NP evaluation include Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS performance measures) ( National Committee for Quality Assurance, 2021). HEDIS evaluate NP base on the effectiveness of Care, access of care, experience of care, utilization and risk adjusted utilization, health plan descriptive information, measures reported using electronic clinical data systems (2021). Professional practice evaluation (OPPE) program is another rating scale for NP performance of care, which is use at a Veterans health administration facility (Peralta, Valente, & Emanuele, 2017). These evaluation tool has proven reputation of NP in the delivery of efficient, accessible, effective, and high-quality care. Hence, NPs improving the skills and knowledge through continue education will continue to improve the reputation and confidence. What are the various means to obtain and maintain a positive rating?Taking responsibility and accountability for one’s own action is critical for the growth of NP profession. To meet or exceed expectations, NP requires the ability to maintain competencies (Bindon, 2017). As NPs we have responsibility to practice within the scope of practice and the laws governing the profession. Also, continuing education is another way NP can improve the rating scale. Learning new skills, attending conferences and joining NP organizations keeps one up to date and improve current evidence-based practice. Implementing evidence-based practice is another excellent means to improve NP evaluation or grading. Translating into practice current evidence-based practice improve patient care. Continue education also enhances professional development as one is equipped with new skills and tools.ReferencesNational Committee for Quality Assurance. (2021). HEDIS performance measures.
