PLEASE READ – Chem 1LD Final Exam Information

Chemistry 1LD Students,

You are close to finishing the last experiment tonight – woo! All that is left is the final exam for this course which will be taking place next week. It consists of two components worth a total of 200 points which is the same as four experiments so this can be a grade changer if your looking to raise your grade:

#1) 11 question Canvas Quiz using Respondus Lockdown Browser worth 100 points. There will be one question per experiment, two questions on safety concepts, and one question on any of three computational studies you completed (they are randomized so you will not know which of the three computational studies you will be asked about – study them all). The quiz will say it is worth 25 points but we will be multiplying your score by 4 afterwards. You are assigned to take this quiz during your lab day/time that you officially enrolled in (Tu 3-5 PM or W 6-8 PM). The only difference is that while the exam is available for two hours to give you time to set up respondus, you will only have 90 minutes once you actually commence the exam.

#2) One essay that is open book and open internet worth 100 points. The only restrictions are that you must work on it alone, the response must be entirely in your own words (will be scanned through turnitin.com), and the format must follow a set of guidelines provided to you. The prompts will become available to you Monday March 8th in the form of a Canvas Quiz, you must select/submit which prompt your answering first, write your response in ELN and submit in ELN, and then submit the timestamped PDF into Gradescope which can be accessed from your Canvas page. All essay guidelines and general final exam information can be found in the last folder of your ELN called “Lab Final”.

Important: You only get one ELN submission for this so make sure your PDF generates correctly (generate a test PDF) and you meet all the essay guidelines before hitting the yellow submit button. Except for extreme technological issues, it will cost 10 points to have your ELN unlocked to make any form of edits to your essay response so please triple/quadruple check your work. As for the Canvas quiz portion, there is a practice quiz currently available in Canvas which you are required to take this week. Finally, the font size and type stated in the essay guidelines are the default settings of an ELN rich text box. Therefore, once you add the rich text box, just start typing your response abiding by the rest of the guidelines which the sample essay reflects.

As there is no new experiment this week, if you have any late/missing assignments OR there are any assignments you need your TA to regrade/reexamine for any reason, this is the week to address those. After all parts of the final are submitted by March 12th, we will assume all your scores in Canvas and Sapling are accurate towards determining final course grades.

Finally, since this final exam is entirely independent, that means your TAs, myself here on Piazza, and the instructor cannot answer any questions regarding course concepts/assignments or provide any clarification on the essay prompts themselves starting the morning of March 8th. Therefore, if you have any questions on anything, please make sure to ask this week. I will closing down Piazza on March 7th @ 11:59 pm and there will be no Zoom TA office hours next week for this reason. If you do encounter any emergencies or technological issues during the final exam, please email Head TA Taylor, Professor Edwards, and your TA right away.

Thank you for taking the time to read through this, I know it was a lot but your final exam is very important. If you have any questions or need clarifications about your final, please feel free to post them down below in the follow-up discussions and I will be happy to answer. It has been a great quarter and I am proud of how hard you guys are working. Everyone is able to do very well on this final and all your other final exams – you all got this! Almost to the finish line!
