The Yellow Wallpaper Interpretation by Charloette Perkins Gilman Discussion

I’m working on a literature multi-part question and need a sample draft to help me learn.

Write a 4-5 page essay that presents an original interpretation of the reading, “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Use any combination of the literary terms (genre, plot, and point of view only) we have discussed to analyze the work and explain how these formal aspects contribute to the meaning or influence the reader’s perception. Remember that it serves no purpose to merely point out metaphors, first-person narration, or other devices without showing how these elements contribute to the meaning–go beyond simply identifying these aspects and interpret the work as a whole. Be sure to refer to specific passages to support your interpretation. No outside sources necessary only quotes from the story itself.

here are some notes I took, maybe this could help:

• The story begins what’s a married couple temporarly renting a summer home in the country.
• The wife spends her days at home while the husband, John is usually away as he is a doctor needing to take care of hi8s patients and cases.
• Use of color: yellow
• Life, energy
• The story takes place in the late 1800’s. Where women had no rights, were not able to vote, and don’t even make their own money
• Many women felt trapped.
• Narrator is imprisoned within her own mental thoughts along within the walls of the summer home.
• First person narrative of a women suffering from mental health illness
• Confind in a room w metal bars
• The dynamic of the relationship is very unbalanced as John dominance has complete control over his wife’s life. The wife also doesn’t share her secretive thoughts as she does not trust to share them. After all her being expressive about her inner thoughts is what lead her into facing that yellow wallpaper day and night.
• Had a baby, John belittles her, she is aware of her illness
• John does not allow his wife to write work or socialize with others aside from him and Jennie.
• As she’s left with very little to do she finds herself progressively finding interest in the yellow wallpaper.
• Gains interest in the pattern within the wallpaper.
• Begins to believe that many women are imprisoned behind the wall paper and makes it a mission to free them all before she leaves the home.
• To do this, on the last day, she locks herself on the room and begins tearing the wallpaper in hope to help the women rediscover their freedom.
• The genre of this work would be categorized as a work about feminist as the story does illustrate a powered man and his silenced wife who obeys his commands. in the late 1800’s the story may have been understood to be a horror story due to the lack of knowledge about mental health.
