PEER POST # 1

When I first learned about deepfake, I was mind blown yet again by how much technology is really capable of. I initially began to grow curious as to why someone would want to use this deceptive technology though. I mean, it personally doesn’t appear to have any positive outcome overall. I also find it completely unfair that someone can just take your pictures and there’s nothing you can really do about it. Especially those of us that are parents, people stealing photos are one of the main reasons I don’t post many photos of my son on social media. However, I am also aware that this is just how the internet works and what you choose to put out there is really up for grabs by anyone. However, morally, I have to say that deepfake would do more harm than good. With how inappropriate the internet and social media can be, it wouldn’t be hard for someone to create horrible content that depicts someone and ruin their career, societal image, and other aspects of their lives. However, it really depends on the user behind the screen. I find it hard to place anything into a one-size-fits-all category based on that aspect alone. While one person with bad intentions on the internet may take advantage on an unsuspecting person, there is also a use for deepfake in the medical field, which is a positive thing.

My initial reaction tot he AI of deepfake was that of being alarmed. The capabilities of this kind of technology is astounding as it can be a helpful tool for things like movies and film, or it can be used as a tool for deception. With social media and media biases its extremely hard to get accurately sourced news or information from most places. An artificial intelligence like this can be used to promote propaganda and create fake outreach to promote something that the person the A.I is emulating does not agree with. I do not feel like this positives of this kind of technology outweighs the bad.
