State University of New Jersey Visual Strategies of AIM and Chicanos 1970s Discussion

Question Description

I’m working on a political science multi-part question and need an explanation to help me understand better.

Hello again! loved you did for me last time and i’m back again. I have two questions for my American Studies class. all the materials needed to complete the work will be provided in the documents. I labeled what material can be used to help answering the question. images will be provided in the attached documents with the questions as well.

question 1 : T.V. Reed defines a social movement as such: “Social movements—the unauthorized, unofficial, anti-institutional, sustained collective actions of ordinary citizens trying to change their world—have shaped politics, culture, and political culture as much as any other single force. It is important to study these movements because of the crucial roles they have played in making national and world history.” Over the course of the first half of the semester, we have looked at various social movements that have used art to impact national and world histories. In three to four paragraphs, examine how HIV/AIDS activists used art and visual advocacy to bring visibility to the crisis and to change representation of how those most impacted by the virus were represented. Be specific and detailed in referring to ACT UP, Gran Fury, and other collectives and artists. Use T.V. Reed’s readings and the documentary United in Anger: A History of ACT UP in your essay. Include a discussion of at least one of the images below. Be sure to proofread your essay for punctuation, grammar, and typos.

question 2: In three to four paragraphs, compare the visual strategies of the American Indian Movement and the Chicano/a/x Movement of the 1970s. In your analysis be sure to use the course readings and materials assigned for February 11 and February 15. Mention how both movements were anti-assimilationist and were influenced by the Black Power Movement, especially the Black Panthers. Provide a careful reading of each image, informed by course lectures and materials. Share what you know about the context for each image. How does each image reflect the political and cultural goals of the movement represented? Be sure to proofread your essay for punctuation, grammar, and typos.
