.Essay # 2: Analyzing Writers’ Processes

Context: Perhaps the most important threshold concept that writers need to understand is that writing is a process. What writing experts mean in calling it a process is that there are discrete, discernable steps that all writers engage in as they develop, write, revise, and publish their work. Most novice writers are unaware of the different steps and don’t know how to use them to their advantage. Successful writers can identify these steps and use them consciously. To get a better sense of the different steps involved in the writing process, Unit #2 culminates by analyzing how ‘professional’ writers talk about their writing processes.

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to help you develop the following skills:

1. Analyze audience, purpose, and context,

2. Respond appropriately to different rhetorical situations and constraints,

3. Build a solid connection between reading and writing, with the emphasis on

understanding texts, oral, writing, and visual,

4. Use the MLA citation method for documenting basic, fundamental research

tasks, and

5. Demonstrate the conventions of Standard American English grammar and

appropriate mechanics across various genres and writing situations.

Planning, Drafting, and Revising:

1. You will need to begin your research early and you should anticipate that you will need to read more than five interviews. It would be unlikely to see enough patterns emerge within the first five interviews that you select. Be prepared to read! Keep track of what you observe in each interview, even if you’re not submitting them for the required journal.

2. Analyzing is a complex task, so don’t get overwhelmed. What you’re trying to do is mine the interviews for evidence of different components of the writing process. It may be helpful to look back at your notes and the readings for keywords (such as planning or revision) or different concepts from the readings (like a ‘shitty first draft’ or practices identified in Sondra Perl’s article) and then think about which interviews demonstrate those topics.

3. This is a four-page essay, which means you need to think beyond a five-paragraph essay. You will want to consider how you will organize your paragraphs. Will you organize body paragraphs around each aspect of the writing process that you are working with (see number 2 above)? Will you use different organizational patterns?

4. Remember that you will need to make claims, supported by evidence in your body paragraphs. All evidence, whether you are summarizing, paraphrasing, or directly quoting the interviews must be cited per MLA standards. Keep the Handbook near you as you write!

What Makes it Good?

Successful academic essays demonstrate the following characteristics (and others, but we’ll worry about them later!):

  • Make a clear point (claim) or series of points (claims) about your subject of inquiry (the writing process).
  • Balance use of quotations as examples with analysis of them.
  • Create an interesting representation of your research and your findings
