PHYSICS 1 Pasadena City College Scientific Writing Research Paper
Question Description
Find a current (within the past 4 weeks) news article in some popular media (newspaper, magazine, etc). The topic of the news article should be physics related, but does not need to be physics that we have already discussed. You will have better luck in the science section of the news app on your phone than you will with a search for “physics news” when trying to find “popular media”. After reading the article, address the following in your submission.
- First Paragraph: A brief summary (show that you have read). What is the main point (what is the authors claim) and what evidence does the author present to support the claim?
- Second Paragraph: This will be the Reasoning part of CER. In your own words, provide reasoning to connect the given evidence to the claim. Remember that the reasoning section is where the physics principles are brought in to the discussion. Based on those physics principles, does the evidence support the claim? Is the evidence relevant? Since most journalists don’t write in CER format, the author may not provide reasoning, but you should. It is OK if you are not 100% clear on any component, but if there are portions that you do not understand, identify these clearly and explain why you don’t understand. The key here is to show your thinking about the writing.
- Include a proper citation
- Third Paragraph: Add to our ongoing conversation by imagining a scientific future. Describe something that doesn’t exist now, but you hope will be true in 20 years and what the implications might be.
