Ethical principles should guide all research activities, especially where human subjects are involved. Potential research participants should be properly informed and consent to the research to be conducted; be subjected to minimal risk of harm; have their anonymity and confidentiality protected; not be subjected to deceptive practices; and have the right to withdraw from the research process at any time. The Belmont Report “identifies basic ethical principles and guidelines that address ethical issues arising from the conduct of research with human subjects” (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2019, para. 1). The Belmont Report was created in response to violation of rights of human research subjects in the Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male, a clinical study conducted between 1932 and 1972 by the U.S. Public Health Service.

To protect the rights and welfare of human subjects invited to participate in research at Oakwood University, or research elsewhere that is conducted by members of the institution’s faculty, staff and students, the institution maintains an Institutional Review Board (IRB) that has the authority to approve, request modifications or disapprove research requests. The primary purpose of an IRB is to assist with protecting the rights and welfare of human subjects involved in research activities that are conducted under the designated IRB’s authority.

For this assignment, you will be required to read The Belmont Report and then complete the Human Research Protection Program’s Assurance Training. You are also asked to complete Sections 1-8 of Oakwood University’s IRB application as it pertains to your Business Research Proposal. The OU IRB form can be located on Oakwood University’s IRB Webpage under “IRB Applications, Guides and Forms.”
