New York Week 7 Opting for Orphanages or Children Institutions Discussion

Question Description

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING WORD LIMIT REQUIREMENTS:

Please note that each and every assignment has its own word limit.

In what situations would orphanages or institutions for children be appropriate options and at what ages?

Many children end up in orphanages because they either had one living parent who has abandoned them because they do not have the means to care for them, or they have lost both parents making them a (“double orphan”). However, situations, why children end up in orphanages, is due to poverty, disabilities, and discrimination. Some struggling families give their children to orphanages or institutions at a very young age. These families find it hard to feed their children, find jobs, homes, or have mental health challenges, or are coping with disability and other special needs (“Why do children end up in orphanages?,” 2019). Moreover, some families view orphanages or other institutions as a way of providing hope for their children and feel they would be better off. Unfortunately, the longer a child is detained within an orphanage or institution, the greater the risk of harm (“Why do children end up in orphanages?,” 2019). Orphanages or institutions should never be a solution regardless of the situation, disability, or age of a child. The best result should be to find safe homes for children within their immediate family or make community-based care arrangements.

This woman I know made the decision to put her daughter in an institution at the age of 6 months old because she could not care for her. Her baby was diagnosed with “Shaken baby syndrome”, and she could not care for her since the baby had a lot of bruising, swelling, and bleeding on the brain which put her in a vegetative state with severe brain damage. She could not care for her daughter and work a full-time job and this situation is the reason she needed to admit her into an institution to get additional around-the-clock care. I say that to say this, one will never know the circumstances or fully understand the whole picture as to why so many children end up in orphanages or other institutions at such premature ages. Many of these situations are bad, prayerfully in the future, more can be done to assist children placed in orphanages and/or institutions.

How would a country’s Department or Ministry of Health apply a Health in All Policies approach to address the economic and social issues presented in this statement?

A country’s Department of Ministry of health can implement a Health in All Policies approach addressing economic and social issues by implementing preventative family and community-based services. This service can provide social workers with proper skills, training, and support to help find alternative arrangements for children. In addition, ensuring economic and social determinates are addressed through policy options that ensure early childhood education and care, child poverty, investment strategies, affordable housing, and planning that will improve quality and effective governance for health equity. Moreover, child sponsorships are a great way to bring joy to children once they know and understand they have been sponsored. However, child sponsorships are highly criticized but it is an effective way to gain funding for children and a good mission strategy (Ireland, 2017).
