Los Angeles Pierce College Role of Symbols in Religious Practice Responses

I’m working on a anthropology discussion question and need a sample draft to help me study.

Objective/Goal:

Explain the role of symbols in religious practice, including how they connect to worldview, myths and rituals.

This is the first in a series of discussions on the basic components of religious rituals that are practice for completing the Religious Ritual Observation Project later in the class.

Instructions:

In this discussion, you’ll be asked to:

• Review the attached image
• Think about how you can apply what you’ve learned to analyzing other religious symbols.
• Write about a specific symbol of your choice. (You can choose any religious symbol as long as it wasn’t covered in the modules or textbook or already posted by one of your classmates.)
• Reply to at least two of your peers.

Initial Reply

I strongly recommend making an initial post early in the week calling dibs on the symbol you want to do so you don’t come back to post and find it is already taken! (Your dibs post won’t count towards the three post minimum though.) This also means you need to read other posts carefully.

By Thursday, post your answers to the questions below as your initial reply to this discussion.

You need to post:

1. What your symbol is and what religion the symbol is associated with
2. What the symbol means
3. A picture of the symbol or a link to a website where the symbol can be seen
4. How the symbol links to a worldview, a myth or, looking ahead, how it is used in ritual (Make sure to clearly label whichever element you talk about!)
5. Cite your sources (Links to an external site.)
