The Jim Crow laws were created in response to the 13th amendment. The 13th amendment guaranteed the freedom of people regardless of race. The Jim Crow laws were created in certain states, especially south, that segregated whites and black Americans. This was done under the pretext of black Americans not being equal to whites. They said that having said freedom does not mean being equal. Although the 13th amendment was a step in a positive direction the Jim Crow laws were put into place as a reminder that they were still not completely free.

With the laws in play there were many people who tested the boundaries of these laws like Plessy. There were also others like Brooker T. Washington and W.E.B DuBois who proposed what should be done to achieve equality. Brooker T. Washington was once a slave who advocated for equal rights from both the African Americans and whites. In his Atlanta compromise speech, he would ask the government and president to give black Americans equal jobs and education. He would tell the black Americans that they should not move up south and stay there and work hard so that it is possible to make the country better. He even said by working hard and having the actions of the black Americans be reflected on the economy of the US would eventually make whites accept them in equal rights as well He also spoke about the benefits in letting the black Americans into the workforce. He said that it would bring about a better economy in a variety of sectors from engineering to politics. The only problem was that most black Americans of the timer were illiterate and ignorant. The beliefs W.E.B. DuBois was different to those of Booker T. With a few exceptions. He took the approach of helping those who were more elite on terms of education. He was criticized both Booker T. Washington and the black Americans for continuing the farce. He even said that all the current problem could have been fixed if black Americans had gone for education instead of choosing not to. He would say that Booker should have not made an emasculating effect on caste distinctions. 2. DuBois, “Booker T. Washington and others,” 91-92.

Booker T. Washington and W.E.B DuBois were both two leaders that proposed two different approaches to African Americas moving forward at the beginning of the 20th Century. They both wanted better lives for African Americans in a time where Jim Crow laws made lives for them much harder. These men wanted more equal opportunities for African Americans so they could have better lives as human beings. Booker T. Washington used an approach to be kind and asking for genuineness from southerners for rights in this way. He would use examples in his speechesto show that African Americans just want an opportunity to be the best they can be. “To those of my race who depend on bettering their condition in a foreign land, or who underestimate the importance of preserving friendly relations with the southern white man who is their next door neighbor, I would say: “Cast down your bucket where you are”(Washington). He really just wants to make a friendly relationship with his white men neighbors and not an enemy. His direction in his methods are very trying to deescalate the situation of what it comes down to, white people just hating African Americans at the time. W.E.B. DuBois’s writings of “Booker T. Washington and Others” starts off with him showing why Washington has a lot of respect with regards of his name by most people. Towards the middle of the essay, DuBois goes to state what he thinks needs to be done better and what he feels “Mr.Washington” got wrong. “It would be unjust to Mr. Washington not to acknowledge that in several instances he has opposed movements in the South which were unjust to the Negro”(DuBois). He really goes into what wrong doings Mr.Washington has done and why he shouldn’t be looked up to as a hero and someone to lead. He feels that his new coming generation needs to do things differently. He goes into to say how he will support Washington even with everything he has stated about him as long as he is more open about things and he should try to be better for African Americans and not settle for what he can get. He ends his essay by saying, “That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their creater with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”(DuBois). I really like how he stated this line at the end and his whole ending paragraph in general. It felt like it really made me have more respect for the writer, helping their argument.
