ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION

Objective:

To create a set of PowerPoint slides to guide educator thinking about multiculturalism and to evaluate those slides.

Scenario:

You are a preschool teacher in a multicultural school in an urban area. Many of your students come from Japan, Mexico, the Middle East, and Russia. Based on conversations in the faculty lounge, you have observed that several teachers are puzzled by the different cultural behavior patterns of students’ families. You have also detected several biases among teachers about the “right” way to socialize children. Teachers have had heated discussions specifically about communication styles. Some are puzzled by the quieter parents and have suggested that they are “hard to read.” Given your interest in multiculturalism, you decide to take on a leadership role in your school to promote mutual understanding and suggest that the school host a multicultural fair.

Focus Assignment

1. Create five PowerPoint slides for a presentation at a staff meeting in which you explain your rationale for having the fair and propose two activities for engaging the community. One slide should address the question of the “right” way to socialize children and one slide should raise the topic of differing communication styles among parents.
