Analysis involves taking things apart to examine their component parts and the way they work together. Evaluation is a process of determining the value of things (which the book calls “X” and I will refer to as “genre”) based upon an articulated criteria. The general use term for this combination process is criticism, of the type you’ve perhaps encountered as art, film, literary, product, etc. criticism.

I would like you to apply the idea of criticism in a comparative way to look at two “texts”. The default assignment is to use to texts related in some way to either your major, or area of interest outside of school. Ideally, the two “texts” will either be written (essays/articles/etc) or substantially coherent (as in films, websites, songs, etc).

But, you are also free to use any number of options, provided you run them past me first (during next week’s “Topic Preview” Moodle assignment) as the basis for comparing two “texts” of whatever type you want.

What you will need to do to complete the essay is:

1. Establish a “genre” to explain how the two texts relate to each other and the world, based one of the essays from the chapter.

2. Establish a criteria list to use for examining the texts. e.g. “improvements to the original, musical quality, ability to stand alone.”

3. Evaluate the texts based on the criteria, coming to some conclusion about the relative merits of each.

4. Formulate a thesis statement that expresses the evaluative conclusions you’ve reached, and the values that you used to get there. e.g. “Russ Meyer’s Prince of Egypt and Joe Briggs’ Pyramid Land are both good general interest books on Egypt, but Meyer’s book is much better suited for use by teachers because of its visual and literary qualities.”

5. Somewhere in your paper, include one of the definition types we will have discussed–formal, informal, example.

This paper may seem more complicated than it really is. People routinely use this process in their everyday lives. Decisions are almost always made by this method–identify the choices, decide what is most important, rate the choices on those things, and decide. In this case, the primary difference will be the level of specificity–you will need to use quotations, examples–and the fact that this evaluation can be somewhat open-ended, that is, you can decide both texts have strengths and weaknesses and serve different purposes.
