Idaho State University Entry Position & Resumes for Different Jobs Letters

Question Description

I’m working on a communications exercise and need support to help me study.

Instructions: One of the most challenging aspects of writing a resume for your first post-college position is figuring out how to make ordinary job experiences (restaurant worker, receptionist, groundskeeper) appear relevant to those hiring for more advanced positions (accountant, engineer, etc.). How do you take past job responsibilities that are seemingly unrelated to the jobs you will be applying for and make them relevant for the new position? For this assignment, you will draft short resume entries, making experience from several jobs relevant to new job options.

For example: You will be applying for a position on the staff of a U.S. Senator, and you have past experience as a cook in a diner. Create an entry:

Line Cook Joe’s Diner Idaho Falls, Idaho 1/19-12/20

  • Coordinated orders from up to 20 tables at a time
  • Prioritized responsibilities to ensure health of staff and cleanliness of kitchen
  • Advised management on new kitchen procedures and new menu items
  • Collaborated closely with a staff of 18 people
  • For 4 of the following scenarios, create an entry for a resume that demonstrates the way that past on-the-job experience can be relevant to a new type of position. Each entry should have between 4 and 6 bullet points. Each should make use of action verbs, should demonstrate parallel structure, should include concrete detail. Make up details that would be appropriate for the scenario.

    1) You will be applying for an entry-level position in a marketing firm, and you have experience as a bank teller.

    2) You will be applying for a position as an accountant, and you have experience working as a receptionist.

    3) You will be applying for a position as a researcher for the Environmental Protection Agency, and you have experience as a member of the grounds crew at your company.

    4) You will be applying for a position as a human resources consultant at a large corporation, and you have experience as a server at a restaurant.

    5) You will be applying for a position as an office manager at a large hospital, and you have experience working in the fulfillment center/warehouse at Amazon where you pack boxes to ship to customers.
