Glendale Community College Irish and Chinese Immigration Discussion
Question Description
I’m working on a american studies discussion question and need support to help me study.
In reading the excerpt critiquing Chinese and Irish immigration, we are once again made aware that anti-immigrant sentiment has been with us for some time. Now we can see where some of our country’s current attitudes evolved and, sadly, expanded the distrust of “others.” Now this sentiment is a bit puzzling in lieu of what the other excerpt, where an immigrant calls upon others to embrace “an American Identity,” suggests. Perhaps this individual was neither Chinese nor Irish and obviously fared better once he settled here.
TASK:Identify a particular passage from either one of these pieces that you strongly agree with, or disagree with, and explain why, based on your 21st century perspective (what you know now that they didn’t know back then). Just write the passage, word for word, followed by your explanation.
