The Situation of French Farmers before the Bourgeois Revolution in 1789

This painting shows a peasant carrying a clergy and an aristocrat on his back.

The painting depicts an elderly, ill, but he is carrying on his back two big and fat men. Two men are the image for the aristocracy and clergy in French society in 1789. In those years, all the peasants and city workers who were the Third estates were oppressed and exploited their labor.

Besides, the agriculture was backward, low productivity, and abandoned land. The industry and commerce developed, but it was constrained by feudalism.

French feudal society is divided into 3 estates: clergy, nobility, and commoners. The First Estate was included clergy such as bishops, priests, cardinals, etc. They symbolize the clergy by the man, who sat in the front, wore purple clothes, wore a cross on his neck, and looked happy and satisfied on his face. The nobility held high positions in society, the administrative and military apparatus like the king, lord or wealthy landowner. The person sat in the back-in red and blue-wore a long sword at the flank with many noble jewels and feather hats, symbolizing the aristocracy.

Both of them were chubby and cheeky. Their cheeks were fat; their hairs were neatly and curly, and their clothes were colorful, flashy and extremely noble. Clergy and nobles were the caste that held all authority, enjoyed all economic privileges, and they did not have to pay any taxes to the king. Finally, people of the Third Estates were usually famers, peasants and city workers. The poor old man, who carrying two man in his back, represented the Third Estates. He looked so tired, poor and sick. He wore old and torn clothes, and his clothes were patched in several places. Even the shoes he wore were worn, old and torn. He could barely carry two people on his back, needing the help of a cane as well as a worn hoe. This is the expression for the crude and backward production tools of farmers as well as the agriculture of France before the revolution. His face looked miserable and tired because of carrying two men on his back while the faces of the other two men looked ruddy, happy and comfortable. In the pockets of the clergy and the nobles poked out documents of loans, farm rentals, and regulations of feudal obligation of peasants, which probably could not pay for thousands of generations. At the feet of the peasants were animals that often- destroyed crops such as rats, pigeons and rabbits, etc. The products that were made were meager and must be paid to the nobles, clergy and the animals that sabotage them.

The economic, political, and social conflicts within the French feudal regime were increasingly fierce, including the conflict between the Third Estates (want to abolish feudalism) and the last two estate nobility and clergy (want to maintain feudalism). Authoritarian monarchy, division of estates led to fierce social conflict. The crisis of national finance forced King Louis XVI to convene a three estates conference at the palace of Versailles to propose borrowing and tax increases. Peasants, salaried workers, and on the broader side of the false upper-class resented of the warlords. The Third Estates and intellectuals influenced by the ideas of the Enlightenment philosophers. All of these is the cause of the bourgeois revolution in 1789 in France.

The bourgeois revolution of France overthrew the feudalism regime, bringing the bourgeoisie to power paving the way for capitalist development. This is the typical bourgeois democracy revolution. This revolution opened the era of victory and strengthened the bourgeoisie dominance around the world.
