Question Description
Should viruses be considered living?
In this week’s lab, we looked at the approach scientists use to problem solve . Many of these investigations start with an observation that generates a question to answer. Background information is accumulated and the scientist is able to propose a hypothesis that can be tested. In this discussion, you will be asked to determine if something is alive or not alive. Sometimes, things aren’t always obviously “alive” or “not alive.” For example, a mule. They cannot reproduce more of their own kind, but their cells can divide and reproduce, and they have all the other characteristics of a living organism. Here’s an even trickier one: what about a virus? Is a virus alive?
What you need to do
Step 1:
Take a stand: Read the question above and then read the attached article taking notes as needed. Also watch the Amoeba Sisters video below and take notes as needed. Once you have done your research, make a claim that answers the question above and write it as an “I believe viruses….” statement in this discussion. You will then write a paragraph underneath your claim that supports your position based on the information provided in this article and video. You may add other resources but be sure to site your references. Your paragraph should be 5-7 well written sentences. Once you post your response, you will be able to see the responses posted by your classmates.

Respond to three classmates, commenting on their view point and how it compares to your stand. Did their argument change your mind? Did their evidence get you to think about viruses in a different way?

Grading
Initial summary to this thread is due March 15th at 9:00 am. Initial responses that are 5-7 sentences that are grammatically correct will receive 5 points.
Your responses to three classmates must include at least 3-5 grammatically correct sentences and comment on the poster’s argument will receive 5 points and are due the beginning of class, March March 22 at 9:00 am
Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for DF3.
This rubric will be used to assess the Week 5: Discussion Forum-3 that students will be assigned on a bi-weekly basis. Once the student has written and submitted their summary, they will need to review their peers summaries. They will need to choose 3 student summaries and submit a 3-5 sentence comment for each. This Discussion Forum is worth a total of 10 points. 5 points for article summary and 5 points for 3 peer reviews
