YOUR OWN SELF-DIRECTION PROJECT: STEP 5
By examining your structured diary or your self-recording or both, identify the antecedents of any problem behavior relevant to your goals. Devise a plan for either increasing or decreasing antecedent stimulus control. As one procedure, use new self-instructions; use at least one other technique as well.
Prepare a chart showing the social systems that influence the behavior of your concern. Note whether the systems influence are favorable for reaching your goals, or hinder you. Make a plan to adjust the time you spend with these social groups, and, as needed, develop new social groups and settings that will support your goals.
Write this plan out, just as you have done for those in the previous steps. Chapters 6 and 7 are likely to contain ideas that youll want to incorporate in your final plan, but some aspects of your plan can begin immediately: investigat- ing new supportive social groups; rehearsing changes in your self-talk; deciding how you will balance face-to-face with virtual electronic contact. Your plan is still a work-in-progress, but you can begin to try out the pieces that are ready.
Continue keeping careful records, of frequencies, settings, and of course your structured diary, as you experiment with new and altered Antecedents.
