School Culture as Situated within a Community

Objective: To identify one Public Elementary School within a community and to document the kinds of connections it has with Community Based Organizations (CBO) within that Community and the relationship it has with the parents of the children in the school.Chose one below:

Guidelines/Directions:

Step 1:Background Information –

Research the community where the school you have selected is situated. Collect data from the Internet on community features such as community demographic information, (e.g., information about adults/parents/children/families living within that community), landmarks, interesting facts (important people, events, companies etc.), public art etc. Footnote the importance of 8-15 pieces of data and include the URL for the site(s) you use. In this step you are becoming familiar with the community and its history without having to walk through the community and take pictures/record facts yourself. If the school is in the Bronx you should access the Bronx public Art On-Line which is Lehman’s Art Gallery webpage.

Be sure to include:

(a) ways that the School involves the parents in decision making;

(b) makes parents feel “welcomed;”

(c) ways the parents are asked to contribute to the education of their child; and

(d) how the school appears to deal with a diverse student and teacher population and English Language Learners.
