Attention: Mr. Corey Lumpkin

Dear Mr. Lumpkin:

The Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Delaware has positively contributed to the lives of thousands of youths in the community. Many of the youth return and share their experiences and gratitude. In response to CDC-RFA-CE21-2104, Preventing Violence Affecting Young Lives (PREVAYL), we are applying for the grant and requesting $265,000 in funds to provide age-appropriate violence prevention programs and activities to youth who attend the Boys and Girls Clubs of Delaware and youth in the community. Traumatic events have unexpectedly touched the lives of the youth and their families which in turn, have adverse reactions one of which is violence. This grant is a good fit for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Delaware as it will help to bring awareness, address risk factors, and educate youth and families in the communities about the impact of violence. It will also help to strengthen communities, families, and build an alliance with the youth. Due to COVID-19, our programming and other services have been successfully conducted on Zoom.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Delaware is a nonprofit organization under the umbrella of Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Consistently, for 86 years the Boys and Girls Clubs has kept up with the social trends and continues to made a difference. Our licensed providers at the Boys of Girls Clubs in Delaware teaches life skills, conflict resolution, and character development. In an effort to expose the youth to a safe place in their communities, the Boys and Girls Clubs also offers mentorship, provides role models and a safe environment to help improve their decision-making skills. Many of the youth in the communities are home without supervision and monitoring which can leave room for unhealthy decisions and negative peer interactions. Often times, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Delaware will offer scholarships to families to help pay the application and membership fees. Some of the successes of the program include 87% of youth graduate from high school; 25% graduate from college; 60% participate in educational programs; an increase by 4,000 in youth participation in physical activity; and, full-time staff who are college-educated and professionally trained.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Delaware goal is to provide every youth with exposure, hope, and opportunity. We want to enable the youth to realize their potential and build healthy and meaningful relationships with caring professionals. The funding received for the violence prevention program will allow us to implement strategies and approaches that address multiple forms of violence. The outcome for the program and funding from the grant will provide each youth with an individualized and sustainable plan to violence prevention. Some of the activities will include a pre-test and post-test to gauge their knowledge of violence; role-play youth scenarios; art therapy groups that will depict their definition of violence; and guest speakers to talk about their redemption from violence. We are excited about the grant and we look forwarding to hearing from you. Thank you for your consideration of this request.
