Professional identity is defined as one’s professional self-concept based on attributes, beliefs, values, motives, and experiences(Slay, H. S., & Smith, D. A. 2011). Our professional identities play out in tangible ways such as our language, clothes and everyday behaviour. Our identity is the external representation of our inner feelings, beliefs, experiences and values. We all have a number of identities personal, professional, social which reflect our day to day experiences and the environments within which we operate.
My professional identity takes the role of counseling currently given that I am a therapist by education and passion. I work for an organization where I manage over 28 clients with different traumatic experiences. And in this organization I have come to love what I do even more. I have gained respect from colleagues and also have respect for the organization mainly because their action supports their mission statement to promote self awareness, self efficacy, and the enhancement of well being. I have worked hard in this company for the past two years while upholding my professional identity that stands on the foundation of confidentiality for both clients and colleagues, and cultural respect. With the knowledge thus far, I am aiming to be a supervisor to take on the role of guiding other healthcare professionals in accomplishing their duties. However, my goal is to become the CEO of my own organization in which I am in the works of establishing. In this establishment I will be looking towards the Principle A; Beneficence and Non-maleficence to help guide me to achieving my professional identity of supervisor in my organization. Principle A of the APA ethics code states that psychologists should strive to protect the rights and welfare of those with whom they work professionally (Cherry, 2020). The APA ethics code guidelines will help me establish and navigate my identity as well as the identity of the organization I plan to begin in the very near future.
