Ashland County West Holmes The Evolution Process of Ostriches Discussion
Question Description
We chose to talk about “Ostriches” taxon from the video we watched. This is what we wrote about briefly:
” In the documentary, the ostriches have a behavioral adaptation where they place their heads under the ground to hide from their predators besides; developing long neck was a physiological characteristic to help them feed on higher level vegetation. Their necks were flexible enough to help them overlap in order to reach higher food resources”
The assignment now is:
Objectives of the assignment:
Investigate key information from trustworthy sites about the taxon you chose for the project.
Organize information for future reference.
Compile sentences in your own words using information from different sources.
Cite references correctly.
Instructions:
1. Look for at least 3 scientific articles that contain information about the following topics:
- General description of taxon chosen (habitat, behavior, morphology, taxonomy)
- Evolutionary history of adaptation chosen (when did it appear? how has it changed?)
- Function of adaptation chosen (what is it for?)
- Morphological, physiological and behavioral features behind the adaptation chosen (how does it work?)
2. Write down the information that you find in the articles in YOUR OWN WORDS. Create 4 paragraphs. One per topic described above. Each paragraph should not exceed 100 words). At the end of each sentence indicate where you found that information by adding a citation: in parenthesis add the last name of the author of the paper followed by a comma and the year of publication. If two adjacent sentences were taken from the same article, you can add the citation at the end of the second sentence. Each paragraph should contain at least two citations.
Example
Students in General biology 2 show high motivation for their semester project (Rivera-Caceres, 2021).
If there are two authors add both last names: (Rivera-Caceres & Pereira, 2021)
If there are more than two authors add the last name of the first author and then add the words “et al.” ( “et alter” which means “and others” in latin): (Rivera Caceres et al., 2021)
3. At the end of the four paragraphs write down the References. To get an article’s reference you can just look for the “cite this paper” option in any paper you find (some might have it in different places, it depends on the journal).
Any peer review article reference should include: Authors, year of publication, name of article, name of journal, issue, number and pages of article.
As long as you include that information you can use the format you prefer. However ALL references should follow the same format. If the year of publication is in parenthesis next to the authors, all references should have that.
