University of Southern California Community Policing Philosophy Discussion
Question Description
Community policing is a strategy whereby police officers and community members work together to address crime problems. Within the community policing model, emphasis is placed on ensuring public safety and (re)building trust between police officers and members of the community. Although community policing has existed for some time, experts are calling for a renewed focus on public safety policies that tackle issues related to regaining a trust of the police force. Considering what you have learned about community policing in Chapter 12, please answer the following:
How does community policing fit with the Homeland Security initiatives developed since 2001? Is it a good fit or a bad fit? In what ways would you try to use the community policing philosophy to enhance Homeland Security efforts in a police agency?
