Research Paper I: Research a Movement or Design Philosophy

Discuss the significance of a design movement or philosophy to the history of graphic design.

Discuss the origins of the movement/philosophy with consideration for its place in the political, social, and historical context. Define the movement/philosophy, with emphasis on how it differs from those that preceded and followed it and how its concepts and ideas are manifested in products (e.g., books, magazines, architecture, other products).

Focus mainly on graphic design. Name designers and artists associated with the movement/philosophy and discuss their designs in light of its ideology. (Were they defined by the movement/philosophy? Did they break with it? Are/were their designs more influential than the movement as a whole, or just a part of it?) Discuss any lasting influence the movement/philosophy has had.

The EXPECTATIONS for the Research Paper are:

1. It can be written/presented in any style you want so long it is presented clearly, complete with title page and question.

2. Use sub-headings for different sections of the research paper since the topics are very vast and in this way it will be more organized.

3. The research paper should not be less than 2,000 words and should not exceed 4,000 words. Submit word count.

4. You are expected to include a bibliography in the end, that is list the sources that you have consulted. I need to see that you referred to more than one or two sources for your paper.

5. Add images of art works that you have discussed. make sure that these are labeled properly with title, name of artist, year and museums where they are found.

6. I expect that the final submission is proof read and are grammatically correct using clear language with specific use of terms and art historical references appropriate for the history of graphic design.
