San Diego State University Mythbusters Part 2 Scientific Paper

Question Description

Scientific Paper: Any peer reviewed scientific paper has the following elements. All of these must be included in the paper you submit to Cuyamaca Physics Review.

? Introduction- This is a short, written explanation of the background and purpose of the project. Including:

? the subject of the report

? background information

? a brief description of the physics topics to be studied

? brief exposition of the theory with discussion of working equations and definitions of terms and symbols.

? DO NOT include any results here

? Materials and Methods– This section should describe how the experiments were developed to support the analysis or test the hypothesis, and detail how the experimental results were obtained. Provide enough information or sufficient detail to allow the experiment to be conducted by someone else. This section should necessarily contain the outline of procedure, specific measurement details, precautions (sources of experimental error), and diagrams of the experimental equipment.

? Results and Discussion– Experimental results are presented. The results should be connected back to the original experimental objectives or hypothesis. The results should be presented in the form of figures or tables. Spend at least one paragraph discussing each figure or table (rule of thumb) and remember to number and provide a caption for each. Each table and figure must be explicitly and individually cited in the text.

? Conclusion– Must support or refute the original objectives or hypothesis and provide closure to the report. The conclusion should restate why the work was done, how it was done, and why the results are significant.

? References – should be included, as necessary.

? Appendix – The appendix should contain raw experimental data and example calculations.

The Paper: We are expecting these to be very professional. You all are going into science and will be submitting science papers of some kind whether you go into medicine or academia. So we are expecting the quality that would be expected of a scientific journal. Make sure you include all your parts (abstract, introduction, experimental design, analysis, tables and graphs, conclusion, and sources). Make sure in the introduction you explain the scientific background of your topic. For example, if you chose the balloon experiment talk about the physics of buoyancy and how that allows balloons to have a lifting force. It is wise that you have your paper proofread more than once before submitting
