PSY 699 Ashford Reliability Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Adults Discussion
Question Description
Topic Area
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Adults
briefly discuss for each article the reliability, validity, and generalizability of the research findings.
For each article go to the Methods section and the validity and reliability will be discussed for the testing instruments used. Sometimes the authors do not use the exact words validity and reliability but discuss it in statistical language using coefficient alphas. I know this is statistics but dont go to the dark place!
The following is the range for coefficient scores and what they mean.Use this information when you review the reliability and validity properties for research study you are reviewing.Generally the validity and reliability scores are tied to the research instruments used to collect data in the research study.
1.00 .70 equals robust
.69 .50 equals good
.49 0 equals low.
For example, the test-retest score for reliability is .75 then the test has robust test-retest reliability.Or the construct validity score is .50 then the test has good construct validity.
In terms of generalizability you want to go to the Discussion section for each article and read through the authors’ discussion of the findings and whether or not the study findings can be applied to other groups outside the study, this is generalizability. If the study has the “potential for generalizability” the authors will say the findings need to be replicated in additional research studies to support the findings.
An example of one I have already done:
Neuropsychology Domain- (the study of the relationship between behavior, emotion, and cognition on the one hand, and brain function on the other)
Research Article 1 ( IT CAN BE MUCH BRIEFER THAN WHAT I HAVE DONE HERE )
The study by Ben-Zion et al., (2019) providesan evaluation of clinical symptoms, cognition performance, brain structure andneural functioning of trauma survivors in 1, 6, and 14-month incrementsfollowing traumatic exposure where frequency, severity, and intensity weremeasured. CAPS-5 scale was used and provided a high internal consistency, hightest-retest reliability, and good convergent validity. CAPS-IV provided good reliability, and PTSD checklist for DSM-5 provided a good reliability. Beck DepressionInventory (BDI) showed high internal consistency and high test-test validity.
Longitudinal studies are presented withchallenges when the accurate description of post-traumatic psychopathology hasbeen changed or updated. In this case more than one instrument should be usedin order to reduce misunderstanding or misrepresentation. The number ofparticipants should also be enough so that bias is reduced. A representativesample must also be implemented for the purpose of generalizability.
