Interactions on social media can be very different than face-to-face interactions in terms of how they are recorded, visible to others, and often lack the privacy one might expect from an in-person encounter. Most electronic communications such as e-mail, text, or SMS and posts on social media leave an electronic paper trail that has consequences for your professional behavior and ethical practices. These consequences may result in a breach of confidentiality, could violate laws, and could affect your career. As a counselor, you should be thoughtful and deliberate in terms of how you use technology and social media when sharing information from work, discussing clients, and interacting with others. This will help you maintain an ethical standard for the ways you communicate with clients and keep records as your interactions evolves with technology. Creating a social media policy will help you think through the potential ethical and legal risks associated with the personal and professional use of social media sites and develop appropriate strategies that mitigate such risks.
