OU Advanced Professional Development Leveraging Technology in Workplace Discussion
Question Description
1-
This week’s focus is on technology in business and the virtual workplace. As we experienced this semester, technology can be a valuable tool to overcome physical and geographic boundaries and allow for a diverse workforce. (Imagine the talent a company could hire if they weren’t limited by geography!)
The upside to technology and its use for business is immense, but organizations have to take care that their culture sets the right expectations for how that technology will (or won’t) be used to ensure productivity, keep team members feeling as connected as they would if they reported to an office, and have a little understanding that – well – sometimes things just happen. (As we discussed earlier this semester, if leadership doesn’t create and cultivate the culture it wants, it will get the culture it deserves.)
Watch the following videos to see what NOT to do when leveraging technology in your business operations:
- Video 1 – Tripp Crosby: Conference Call in Real Life (3:25 minutes) – the team is joining a meeting by phone; what could possibly go wrong?
- Video 2 – A Video Conference Call in Real Life (3:24 minutes) – the team is joining a video conference; this should make everyone more accountable than if they just joined by phone, right?
- Video 3 – Every Meeting Ever (3:26 minutes) – the team is now meeting in person; this has to be more productive…. doesn’t it?
- Video 4 – Children Crash a Live TV Interview (0:45 minutes) – this is a real-life video where a professor had some unexpected guests during a live interview with BBC; it illustrates perfectly the challenges of working remotely. (Note: The woman in the video is the professor’s wife and mother to the children.)
