LAVC Classical Art Classicism Classical Antiquity & Western Art Discussion

Question Description

What exactly is Classical Art? What is classicism? What is classical antiquity and how does it influence the development of Western Art? Think about these questions as you watch the two short videos below, and then in your post formulate a statement on this topic which can include a question to your fellow students or an important point you think that others can respond to. Make sure to do peer response! It’s worth a lot of points…

(Important: All posts should be brief paragraphs, 5-7 sentences with no quoted or paraphrased material. Please use your own words. Longer posts with irrelevant information will have points deducted.)

Post on Time: All Discussion posts are due Wednesdays. You must post your initial discussion by the due date. After the due date you will have 2 days to respond to others (including responding to the professor if asked). If your initial post is not by the due date, you will receive a 0 for the assignment. Please note that you must post before seeing the work of other students. If you write an initial post in order to see other responses, then delete it and repost, or return to “edit” a post, you will receive a 0 grade.

Keep it Short: Do NOT post more than 5 sentences and stick to the point. (any posts longer than 5 sentences will be deleted and you will be asked to re-post.) No one wants to read an entire essay or a bunch of random information. Make it short and conversational and answer the prompts directly. (Don’t rephrase the prompt either, answer it instead.)

Respond to Peers thoughtfully: Review the Netiquette guidelines under the RESOURCES module.

Netiquette and Participation in the Online Classroom:

Please use complete sentences and proper grammar in your discussion posts. Be

respectful of others opinions and contributions. Keep in mind that we all have

something unique to contribute to this class. One of the best ways to show that you

appreciate contributions is to offer thoughtful feedback on your classmate’s efforts.

Accept help when you need it and offer it when you can.

Successful online learning requires active and timely participation in

the Discussion Area. Students earn weekly participation grades based upon the

quality of their responses to weekly assignments, including discussion questions.

Participation point values in the learning experience are defined within each

assignment as presented in the grading criteria or as directed by the facilitator.

Students are expected to read the online lectures and all posts in

the Discussion Area. Posting assignments or e-mails to students and/or faculty

outside of classroom threads does not count as participation.

1. Substantive participation consists of responses to classmates or the

instructor in classroom discussions that relate to the course subject matter.

Substantive responses should not be mere opinion, but must be based

upon:

  • the course content
  • assigned reading
  • related outside resources
  • personal experience relevant to the week’s topics
  • Quality participation in the discussion occurs by:
  • asking a question that generates more discussion
  • providing a statement of clarification
  • providing a point of view with rationale
  • challenging a point of discussion
  • making a relationship between one or more points of the discussion
  • Participation is an opportunity for your instructor to see what you have learned and for you to
  • demonstrate your comprehension of the materials. Substantive discussion should include the use of:

  • relevant vocabulary words
  • concepts from the readings exhibiting a command of the subject matter
  • appropriate documentation or citation
  • A simple, “I agree,” “Good work,” or “I like it,” does not count as substantive
