Question Description
- Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
- Go to the website and read Environmental Scanning: Looking for Strategic Intelligence.
- Download and review the Workforce Planning Toolkit: Environmental Scan and SWOT Analysis published by CPS Human Resource Services.
- Download the file titled Discussion Forum HR Environmental Scanning. (Notice that there are two pagesthe first page is for identifying external scanning sources and the second page is for identifying internal scanning sources.) The document will be completed and attached to your initial post for the purpose of sharing and collecting external and internal sources of information from others in the cohortinformation that is beneficial for use in the organizations ongoing environmental scanning effort.
- Navigate to the 6.3 Discussion: HR Environmental Scanning and submit your initial post, addressing each of the following:
- Understanding Environmental Scanning. In the discussion forum narrative, describe what environmental scanning is (definition), why it is needed (its purpose), and how it may be used to support human resource management work efforts.
- Environmental Scanning Tool. Develop an environmental scanning tool for the selected organization using the downloaded HR Environmental Scanning tables, following the instructions below:
- External Sources Table. Complete the external source table using the six general areas already listed in the first column. The six areas are taken from the PESTEL model: politics, economics, society, legal, and environment. For each general area, identify two types of information and corresponding sources of information and web sources. (See the example shown on pages 78 of the Workforce Planning Toolkit: Environmental Scan and SWOT Analysis.)
- Internal Sources Table. Complete the internal source table. For this table, you will need to identify the six general areas that are most pertinent to HR in the selected organization. Next, for each of the six general areas, identify two types of information and corresponding sources of information and web sources. (See the example shown on page 11 of the Workforce Planning Toolkit: Environmental Scan and SWOT Analysis.)
- Benefits of Environmental Scanning. Following completion of the external and internal tables in the document, complete the narrative with an explanation stating why the specific tool that was completed is specifically beneficial to the selected organization.
- Provide a detailed post that demonstrates clear, insightful critical thinking. Your initial posting should be 200300 words long (not including the attached document with tables).
- Your initial post is to include the appropriate references for resources you have cited as a paraphrase or direct quote. Keep direct quotes and paraphrases limited to a maximum of 15% of your overall initial posting. For help on how to paraphrase, refer to the Purdue OWL Paraphrase website.
- Post your initial discussion by the end of the fourth day of the workshop.
- Also respond to two of your classmates postings by the end of the workshop. Each discussion response to a classmate should facilitate engaging dialogue and evidence critical thinking. Use one or more of the following ways to engage in scholarly dialogue and expand learning around the topics in this workshop:
- Extension: Expand the discussion.
- Relevancy: Relate the topic to a current event.
- Exploratory: Probe facts and basic knowledge.
- Challenge: Interrogate assumptions, conclusions or interpretations.
- Relational: Make comparisons or contrasts of themes, ideas, or issues.

- Action: Identify application or an action in personal or work life.

- Hypothetical: Pose a change in the facts or issues.
- Priority: Seek to identify the most important issues.
