Part 1: Inspirations from Atwood

Margaret Atwood’s novel Oryx and Crake presents a myriad of “hot-button” issues – you’ve already written about a few of them.

An issue is something that is debated, discussed, argued, or contested. It is not something that is universally agreed upon nor readily answered with a “Yes” or “No.” In this first entry in your “research journal,” identify a “hot-button” issue as it exists in the world that Atwood creates. Include two quotations (MLA formatted in-text citation) that illustrate Atwood’s presentation of the topic.

Then answer – how does the issue exist in the real world? Move your reader from Atwood’s fictional text to our actual life and times – the real and crazy world we live in is what gives Atwood her inspiration, after all!

Some ideas to consider: What do you already know about your selected issue? What have you heard? What have you seen or read, in popular media or anywhere else? Why are you interested in learning more about this issue? What about Atwood’s presentation, or how it exists in the real world, draws your attention? Why did Atwood choose to include your selected issue as part of her text? How is the representation in the text different from how the issue exists in real life?

NOTES

While this is a journal entry and not an “essay,” you do need to maintain focused paragraphs and consider your audience’s needs regarding text and topic introductions.

Word count: 300 – 400 words.
