ENGL 1A CCSF Nonviolent Communication community Discussion
Question Description
_________________________________Discussion #1 – NVC Practices
THURSDAY AT 11:59 PM: Using Chapters 9 & 10 as a foundation, choose a substantial QUOTE from each that resonated with you/for you. Explain the point, using the text to ground your discussion (reference your quotes), and why it resonated. What did it make you think about? How did you connect to it and why? For instance, I might choose the concept of translating “I have to” to “I choose to” as discussed in Chapter 9, and discuss why I found it important. I might go on to talk about how I applied it with a work project specifically, and how that changed my experience and/or the outcome. Do this for each chapter (TWO TOTAL)
SUNDAY at 11:59 PM: Respond to a minimum of two classmates, and to both of their discussion examples from the text. Your response should go well beyond “I thought it was good” and engage with them, explaining why you chose it, what it made you think about or connect to and how it is influencing your own thinking. The point is, get into a discussion (don’t just give them a high five, although those are appreciated, too!).

Discussion #2 – Peer reviewing outline
Thursday by 11:59 PM: Present your outline for review no later than 11:59 pm on THURSDAY Your outline should include your thesis, all topic sentences, and may include some support. Format should follow Research Essay Outline Format.
Sunday by 11:59 PM: Review a MINIMUM of TWO classmates’ outlines, using these questions as guides and answering each question in a thoughtful, clear, and full response for each of the outlines you review. Choose classmates who are still in need of reviews; that is, if someone already has two reviews, please move on to someone who has not yet had their outlined reviewed.
NOTE: The earlier you get your outline in, the better chance you have of receiving thoughtful, helpful suggestions from your peers.
Guide Questions for outline evaluations:
- Is the THESIS CLEAR? Rewrite the thesis with the intention of SIMPLIFYING and CLARIFYING the idea presented. (ie. “This is what I think you are saying in your thesis: …. “)
- Check the TOPIC SENTENCES. Are they logical and in direct support of the THESIS (after you have clarified it)?
- Are there any REDUNDANT or UNCLEAR sentences presented in the TOPIC SENTENCES? Rewrite them for CLARITY.
- Are there any ideas here that do not belong? Dont be afraid to change entire ideas if they do not answer the assignment prompt or do not make sense.
- Lastly, if you have any ideas for further research regarding your classmate’s essay/specific interest, please share them with them! A community of research practice can be very valuable.
Outline Assignment Guidelines (taken from this week’s Assignment, posted here also for formatting and instructional guidelines):
Research Paper Outline:
Your outline (Links to an external site.) will constitute three main sections: the Introduction, the Body and the Conclusion.
Introduction
The introduction (Links to an external site.) should contain your thesis statement (Links to an external site.) or the topic of your research as well as the purpose of your study. You may include here the reason why you chose that particular topic or simply the significance of your research paper’s topic. You may also state what type of approach it is that you’ll be using in your paper for the entire discussion of your topic. Generally, your Introduction should orient your readers to the major points the rest of the paper will be covering, and how.
Body
The body of your paper is where you will be presenting all your arguments to support your thesis statement. Start with a strong argument, followed by a stronger one, and end with the strongest argument as your final point.
Conclusion
The conclusion (Links to an external site.) is where you form a summary of all your arguments so you can arrive at your final position. Explain and reiterate why you’ve ended up with the said conclusion.
Research Paper Outline Examples (Links to an external site.) and formatting guidelines are here for your perusal. As you can see, the outlines for this project should be fairly detailed; much more so than the outline for your essay #1 assignment.
