Cause/Effect Essay Essay directions and topics

Choose one of the following topics to write on the causes OR the effects. While you want to focus on either causes OR effects, you will inevitably discuss both (for example, it will be impossible to focus on causes without mentioning some effects). You will notice that some of the topics are specified as only the effects or just the causes to give you a place to start.

This essay also requires you to incorporate research. These essay topics are set up as arguments since it will be easier to take a side and use your argument to do your research and to develop your analysis. Many of you will take ENG 112 after this class, and this will give you a chance to be better prepared with research and argument.

When you have decided on your topic, you must research your topic and have at least TWO sources. Your sources are support for the points you will make in your essay. Your essay is not about the articles you choose. You may also notice that the topics are related to the readings from the summary module. You can choose a topic related to the article you summarized in the last module and you can use that article as one of your sources. The summary itself will have no place in your essay as that is a separate assignment and not the type of writing you are doing for this essay.

Topic Choice

1. Argue that people should limit their time on social media sites by focusing on the psychological effects.

Whichever topic you choose, remember that you want to use clear examples and development to make your argument. Your essay should be a five paragraph essay between 500-750 words long. Make sure that you have your works cited page at the end of your paper. Any paper under 500 words will not receive more than 50 points. The 500 minimum word count does not include the works cited page.

You are not allowed to submit an essay that you have written previously for this class or another.
