Argumentative Research Essay

Prompt:

• A few weeks ago, you watched a video called “No More Drama” by Mary J. Blige. In that video, you were introduced to three people who were Joyce the one with the abusive father, Paul drug addict, and Pelon Mexican gang member .
• At that time, you were asked to compare and contrast at least two of these people to each other.
• For the ARE you are to compare and contrast at least two of these people again. However, this time, you will also have to determine who will be most likely to remain free from their vicious cycles.
  • Are abused women more likely to break free from their abusers and stay out of the cycle?
  • Are drug addicts morel likely to break free from their addiction and stay out of the cycle?
  • Are gang members more likely to break free from their gangs and stay out of the cycle?
  • Does gender play a role? Does socioeconomic status play a role? Does race play a role?
• I would recommend that since this is an ARE, and you have to bring in the opposing side or viewpoints that you decide, as a group, who is your first choice to break and stay out of his/her cycle. Then decide on a second person who you think would be able to break the cycle.
  • This way, your first-choice person becomes your PRO, and the second-choice person becomes your CON.
  • Again, remember that since this an argumentation essay, you bring on the opposing side and refute it. If you do not, your ethos or credibility as the authors will be hurt. Are you trying to hide anything by not bringing in the other side’s viewpoints?
  • There are different ways to bring in opposing views. Review the argumentation format sheet again. For example, you may oppose and refute at the beginning of the essay, throughout the essay, or you may devote only one paragraph to the opposing and refuting.

Requirements:

1. This paper must be at least 10 pages in length or at least 2500 words. This does not include the Works Cited page.
2. Include at least 8 in-text citations. You must use 8 different sources. Therefore, your Works Cited page will contain at least 8 different entries.
3. Of the 8 sources, 5 of them must be from a database. The databases should be listed in a different color in the Work CIted so that I can automatically know which information/source has come from a database vs. the Internet.
4. Follow the MLA format for heading and title. No running header is required.
