For Essay 1, you will analyze a section/s of your choosing from The Odyssey to form a thesis about the overall text. In your paper, feel free to expand on and incorporate ideas that we discussed in class; you should also feel free to use secondary sources (use Library databases for sources). The section/s you choose to analyze is entirely up to you, but you must develop your thesis from one of the essay topics below, and you must use substantiated evidence from the primary text to support your ideas.

Odyssey Essay Topics

Consider the presentation of the gods in The Odyssey. What is the gods’ role? How are the gods depicted? Do they control humans? Do humans have free will? Do they represent divine chaos or divine order? Discuss what the presentation of the gods reveal about the ancient Greek understanding of the divine.

1. Your work should be organized around a focused and interpretive thesis statement. Avoid generalities and interpretations that are statements of fact.

2. Avoid generalizations that are unexplained or unsupported. Be sure to provide specific examples from the text and provide detailed commentary to explain your selections

3. Provide citations for all of your quotes, summary, and paraphrasing of the text

4. Remember to Italicize titles and use quotation marks when directly quoting

o Font: Times New Roman, 12 point

o 1 inch margins, double spaced, and all pages must be numbered

o Heading must have the following information: your name, a line reading “ENGL 2800 Essay # __”, Title of Assignment, due date.

o All essays must be posted by 11:59pm on the day they are due

o The file of the essay must be saved as “[Last Name] Essay#__”
