Aveda Young Man Develops Lung Cancer Due to Environmental Exposure to Chemical Case
Question Description
FORMAT:
Submit a Word document in which you answer each part of the “writing prompt”, in your own words. Please be sure to fully address all parts of the prompt in…
- complete sentences,
- 12-point font,
- double-spaced,
- and a minimum of 500 words.

Your document will be about ~0.5 page long; the word-count (met with clear and thoughtful writing that addresses all parts of the prompt) is what matters most.
WRITING PROMPT:
A YOUNG MAN DEVELOPS LUNG CANCER DUE TO ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURE TO CHEMICALS. FORTUNATELY, THE MUTATION RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CANCER AROSE IN A SINGLE LUNG CELL, AND THE CANCER DOES NOT SPREAD TO ANY OTHER TISSUES. IF HE AND HIS WIFE (WHO DOES NOT HAVE LUNG CANCER) HAVE CHILDREN AFTER THE LUNG CANCER DIAGNOSIS, WHAT IS THE CHANCE THAT HE WILL PASS ON THIS CANCER-CAUSING MUTATION TO THEIR CHILDREN?
- Provide the probability of this man passing on this cancer-causing mutation to his offspring (a child).
- Write one complete paragraph to explain your answer to Part 1.*
[*Be very detailed and specific in your explanation. Draw connections amongst what you have learned in Unit 3 of Bio2]
In your response, please be sure to address:
- How do lung cells reproduce?
- During what process did the cancer-causing mutation in the DNA of the lung cell occur?
- How are cells of reproduction (gametes, a.k.a sperm and egg cells) made?
- What genetic contribution will the father make to his offspring?
