Assigned Discussion Question:
For this week’s discussion question, respond the following prompt. Be sure to adhere to the guidelines for completing discussion questions (posted below):
Use Kings Letter from Birmingham Jail , Orwell’s “Shooting an Elephant”, and Tim O’Brien’s “How to Tell a True War Story” to complete the following assignment:
- Using two of the assigned readings, discuss the authors’ main ideas in regards to social criticism. What criticism or evaluation of society or social values are these authors presenting in their texts? Make sure to support your claims with evidence.
- Using the same two texts chosen for number one, discuss two elements of each author’s style and discuss how those elements of style impact the way we interpret their main ideas. For example, you may want to discuss how the point of view impacts the main idea or how imagery or figurative language evokes particular emotions to make readers feel a certain way about the topic. Review the style materials in Week 5. Explain/exemplify your answers.
