Walden University Principle Centered Leadership Discussion Response

Question Description

COLLEAGUE’S POSTING

Management, to me, means the person [people] that run the day to day operations within a company. Managers often handle things such as scheduling, organization, workflow, and productivity. Strengths are seen in people within management positions often include efficiency, the ability to delegate, structures, organized, and direct communication.

Leadership, in my opinion, is more than numbers or quotas, but the actual act of guiding people to their desired destinations. Some characteristics of good leaders include being inspiring, relatable, empathetic, understanding, and caring. Leaders empower their followers and inspire them to try their hardest to reach their individual goals.

In our course text Principle-Centered Leadership, author Stephen Covey states “While managers must focus on the bottom line, leaders must look to the top line for clear vision and direction” (1991). An organization must first determine its basic values and have a clear understanding of core principals before it can be successful. Otherwise, leadership and employees may not be working toward the same overall goal, which affects productivity.

In some cases, a supervisor can be both a manager and a leader, holding employee responsible for tasks and production levels but also being there to support positive employee mental health within the company. The major difference between the two terms is that managers steer the company while leaders guide the people within that company.
