Walden University Leadership and Management Discussion
Question Description
COLLEAGUES POSTING
Management is being able to “manage.” They are given the parameters to keep things in running motion. They don’t necessarily lead all the time, but are able to make the necessary decisions to keep a business afloat. They are on the top of the food chain so-to-speak. They manage all the decisions.
Leaders can manage, but they are in more contact with the people around them. They are also under the most scrutiny if things don’t go as well as they should. They are also held to a higher standard because they lead. If they delegate assignments to others, they will take the brunt of the misfire because they were the ones in charge.
For example, I manage my husband’s barber shop. I check his calendar to make sure he is blocked out on certain days. I make sure all expenses are taken care of in a timely manner and recorded, I also create the emails that need to get sent to cancel any appointments for any reason he can’t be in the shop.
Where I work, I am a lead teacher at an early learning center. I make up the lesson plans, make sure we have all the proper daily reports, we have the items we need for the day whether it’s hygiene, food, or for lessons. I delegate certain times of the day to my assistant teacher, we work together on completing certain paperwork, but overall if something doesn’t get done right, I am the responsible one because it is my classroom.
Also, take Chapter 2 in The Ethics of Leadership for example, they discuss how the leaders are more vulnerable because they are held to a higher standard and looked at through a microscope. Being in management, sure you can take responsibility for your actions just like the leader, but ultimately, there is no one above you except for you to bring those mistakes to light as opposed to a leader.
